The illustration depicts a priestess (bà đồng) from Tonkin (an area in Northern Viet Nam) by the artist Phổ Ngạn. The priestess covers her hair with a long red scarf and wears a long red gown.

The artwork is based on a photograph taken by photographer Léon Busy in 1916.
