Divine Portraits Project

What is Divine Portraits project?

The Divine Portraits project is our initiative dedicated to providing modern illustrations of the deities in Đạo Mẫu – Four Palaces. Our mission is to make these captivating illustrations accessible to the public, free of charge. Each artwork within the collection is inspired by Vietnamese traditional culture and the rich stories surrounding the deities.

Our ultimate goal is to provide illustrations of all the deities in the Four Palaces’ official pantheon. By offering these illustrations to the public, we hope to foster a deeper appreciation and understanding of Four Palaces’ culture, particularly among young audiences.

What is the goal of the project?

Where is the Idea From?

The idea for the Divine Portraits project arose from the realization that there was a dearth of illustrations depicting the Four Palaces deities. We recognized the importance of visually representing these revered figures and sharing their stories with a wider audience. With this in mind, we embarked on a journey to create modern illustrations that harmoniously blend Vietnamese cultural elements with a contemporary aesthetic.

Since its inception in September 2020, the Divine Portraits project has been steadily progressing. The first illustration, portraying the First Mother Goddess of Heaven, marked the beginning of our endeavor. Our focus lies on the deities within the official pantheon of Four Palaces, drawing inspiration from their hagiographies, court literature hymns, and the Four Palaces’ color system.
