On the 10th day of the lunisolar Eighth month, we honor the festival of the Sixth Prince An Biên, a figure of great significance. Born into a minority ethnic family, he later rose to prominence as a revered military general during the Lý dynasty. His remarkable contributions were instrumental in the resistance against the Sòng invaders.
The primary shrine dedicated to the Sixth Prince An Biên resides in his hometown of Cao Bằng province. According to historical accounts in “Cao Bằng thực lục” (The Chronicle of Cao Bằng) by Nguyễn Hữu Cung, the Sixth Prince was born into a family with a long legacy of tribal leadership in Lũng Đĩnh village, situated in the Thượng Lang region (modern-day Đình Phong commune, Trùng Khánh district, Cao Bằng province). At the age of 18, he assumed the role of tribal chief, earning deep respect from the local community due to his righteousness and generosity, particularly towards the less fortunate.
During the reigns of Emperor Lý Thái Tông and Emperor Lý Anh Tông, the Sixth Prince An Biên made substantial contributions to the resistance effort against the Sòng invaders. He held the esteemed title of General An Biên, overseeing the soldiers guarding the borderlands.
The shrine dedicated to the Sixth Prince An Biên stands proudly at his hometown, Lũng Đính, atop the peak of Mount Đoỏng Lình in Cao Bằng Province. This site is believed to be where the Sixth Prince strategically orchestrated battles to thwart the enemy. The remnants that endure today are marked by mounds, both rectangular and spiral in shape, strewn along the banks of the Quây Sơn River, located just 1 kilometer from the shrine.
