Within the divine realms of the Four Palaces belief, the Third Mother Goddess of Water reigns supreme, Her divine presence embracing water bodies, bestowing blessings upon sea voyagers, and orchestrating wind and rain. She usually adorns Herself in the white regalia, symbolizing Her connection to the Water Palace.

Born of the revered Father Emperor of Water, Dragon King of the East Sea, the Mother Goddess of Water radiates with grace. Among the many hagiographies devoted to Her, the tale of Her marriage with Kính Xuyên holds a place of prominence. Yet, amidst their love, shadows of envy loom, as Kính Xuyên’s concubine, Thảo Mai, weaved a wicked web to tarnish the goddess’ virtuous name, accusing Her of having an affair with another man.

Unjustly accused and imprisoned in the depths of a dark forest, the Mother Goddess found solace in the loving care by the creatures of the wild. Fate intervened when Liễu Nghị, a young man on his way to a national academic contest, stumbled upon Her prison. Touched by Her plight, Liễu Nghị readily offered his help, becoming a messenger of hope in Her hour of need.

Liễu Nghị ventured towards the East Sea until he encountered a sacred parasol tree. Following the Goddess’ instructions, he used Her golden hairpin to knock upon the tree thrice. Winds surged, rain cascaded, and waves danced immediately. From the depths emerged two mighty white serpents, obediently leading him to the majestic dragon palace.

Fulfilling his sacred mission, Liễu Nghị presented the Father Emperor of Water with the letter, revealing all the truth. Enraged by what happened to His beloved daughter, the Father Emperor swiftly dispatched His attendants to apprehend Kính Xuyên and Thảo Mai, while also taking the Mother Goddess to Her rightful place within the embrace of the Water Palace.
